An integrated pest management program is essential in a work place, especially a swine operation. “Flies present various problems to swine operations in the areas of vectoring disease” says Kirk Dailey, regional sales manager for ClariFly® Larvicide. The types of diseases that flies carry not only pose a threat to pigs, but the workers as well. The nuisance of a fly ridden operation damages the profitability of the pigs by “preventing them from eating as much as they could”. ClariFly® Larvicide helps in preventing different species of labeled flies and similar pests from having future generations.
Your Flies and Pests
The house fly can “infect the swine operations with various viruses, PEDs, Seneca Valley Virus, PRRS virus,”. These potential viruses and the flies overall effect the pigs’ health and their profitability, but also “the work environments that the workers have to come to work in and eat their lunches in”, states Dailey. Other pests that provide operational issues are the dark eyed fruit fly and Indian meal moth. Like the house fly and dark eyed fruit fly, the Indian Meal Moth brings threat of disease but “comes in feed and in grain… they pose a challenge purely from the stand point of the mechanics and how feeders work”. It can be difficult to motivate and produce great work knowing that these pests are not under control. Once ClariFly® Larvicide starts its elimination process, Dailey says you will even notice a difference in spider presence because “you get rid of their food supply, the fly”.
Your Effective IPM Program
ClariFly® Larvicide is a feed-through fly control “and by mixing it into the feed, we let the pigs do the work for us”. As it passes through the pig, it helps prevent future larvae from maturing and stopping the generational cycle for those flies. Dailey states “integrated pest management programs utilizing the feed-through is the best way to control future generations, but you are never going to get them all,” which is why having a secondary measure of control is necessary. The Starbar® line of fly control has everything from fly abatement strips to fly bait rotations. This will ensure that you are securing your swine operation from top to bottom, creating a safe environment for your pigs and workers.
