Passion for the dairy industry runs deep in the Preston family—four generations deep. Since 1942, Preston Dairy Farm has raised their own heifers and reinvested everything they grow back into the operation. Like many farms, however, they've faced persistent challenges with flies disrupting the comfort and productivity of their cows. Brian Preston shared how his family found a fly control solution that finally made a lasting difference.
Searching for an Effective Solution
Over the years, Preston tried a range of products and methods to combat flies on the farm. "We have used a variety of fly control products and mechanisms," he explained. "We even move a lot of air to control flies" with numerous barn fans. From pour-on products to bait piles, nothing delivered the consistent results the farm needed until Preston participated in a ClariFly® Larvicide trial.
The results were immediate and noticeable. Preston experienced a "dramatic decrease" in the fly population, something he could clearly track through the fly traps placed around the dairy. This data confirmed what he was seeing day-to-day: ClariFly® Larvicide was making a measurable impact.
Simplicity Meets Effectiveness
Beyond its performance, Preston appreciated how easy ClariFly® Larvicide was to implement. "We appreciate that ClariFly is easy to use," he said. "All the cows are dosed properly, it's included in the feed, and they all get the right amount every day. It's a simple product to use."
For Preston, managing flies is directly tied to managing cattle health—and when cows stay healthy, the operation's bottom line benefits as well.
Reducing Bunching and Improving Cow Comfort
One of the most significant improvements Preston noticed after using ClariFly® Larvicide was a reduction in bunching behavior during the summer. Flies can stress cows, causing them to group together tightly. As Preston put it, "once they start bunching, it's over for the summer. They stay bunched all year long."
This behavior impacts cow comfort and productivity. "When the cows are bunching, they're not laying down, they're not eating, they're not ruminating, and they're not producing the milk that they have the potential to do," Preston explained.
With ClariFly® Larvicide in place, he saw a clear difference: "We didn't see nearly the bunching that we did before." The cows were more comfortable, eating regularly, lying down, and were easier to work with, creating a healthier, more productive environment overall.
Continuing the Family Legacy
Working the same land his father and grandfathers worked before him, Brian Preston is setting up the next generation of Preston dairy farmers for success. With 1,000 cows to care for, he relies on ClariFly® Larvicide as a proven solution. "We continue to use ClariFly because it works," he said. "We continue to see how effective it is."
